Why I believe we need to change our school system-coming from a student

TW: mention of suicides & mental health issues

I know what you might be thinking, 'you're just a kid complaining about homework, what do you know?' To that I say, I might not know much, but I know enough to know that the current school system is not working.

The current school system focuses too much on grades. They want us to get A's and full marks, but they don't really care about whether or not you truly understand the material. We all just blindly memorize our textbooks so we could pass our tests, but the moment it's over, we forget everything and move on to the next subject. Most people forget that we're supposed to be learning and absorbing the material, not just spend the whole year preparing for an hour long test and wiping everything from our memory.

Speaking of grades, there's too many pressure to get good grades. We're told that if we don't do well in school, we won't get into college and our lives will be ruined. It's like our values are placed solely on how well we do in school.

My six-year-old cousin has so many tutors because her parents are scared she'd fall behind. So she goes to supplementary classes instead of being able to fully enjoy her childhood. Kids should be able to play without the fear of disappointing grades; and teenagers should be able to relax and hang out with friends without the pressure from so many forces.

All this stress doesn't help our mental state. So many students now have a plethora of mental issues, me included. Kids today have so much pressure from parents, teachers, and even their peers to excel in school.

So many of my classmates have told me they feel depressed and anxious because of school assignments and expectations from others. And not enough people know or care enough about it. There was a girl in my hometown who committed suicide because she didn't get #1 in her class.

The current school system forces useless knowledge down our throats thinking they're helping us succeed, but all they're doing is making all of us miserable. They stifle our creativity and individual thoughts, forcing us to sit down at our desks for 8 hours-starting from when we're barely awake and drowsy, and ending when we're burnt out and absolutely exhausted-many of us have to stay for extracurricular activities, and then there's still hours of homework for us to do.

I know that this isn't going to change anytime soon, but I hope people recognize that the school system is killing us and we need to do something about it. We should encourage students to express themselves and actually understand what they're learning, and teach educate them on necessary topics [like cooking, cleaning, and whatever taxes are] instead of physics and fucking algebra.

Of course, these are just my opinions, feel free to disagree with me. But if you enjoyed this blog, I hope you'll share it with others and maybe leave a like/comment. :)
