Sadie (Courtney Summers) review

Sensitive topics in the book: Child abuse, Sexual assault, Pedophilia

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Young Adult

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Synopsis:

Sadie grew up with an absent mother and her younger sister, Mattie, whom she loves more than anything else. So when Mattie's body turns up and the police fail to find her murderer, Sadie is broken beyond repair, and a few months later, she ends up disappearing herself. West McCray hears about the story and starts a podcast documenting his journey to find the missing girl, and learn just how far she'd go to take justice into her own hands.

*SPOILERS AHEAD

The more I think about it, the heavier this book gets. I went into it thinking it was just a mystery with an interesting format, but the topics this book deals with are so emotional and heart-wrenching, just oh my god

I've had this book on my TBR for a while, and I finally got around to reading and I'm starting 2024 with a bang. I really don't know what to say other than holy shit that was dark. The book deals with really sensitive topics like SA, pedophilia, and substance abuse. The way the author wrote about it is just so raw and emotional it just makes your heart feel heavy.

The premise was so enticing and I LOVED the podcast format the book used. I also love it when books have two different POVs-the POV of character one and the POV of character two trying to solve the mystery of what happened to character one. You get to see how things differ and what they get right or wrong.

I have to mention that I loved Sadie. She was flawed and she did shitty things but you know where she's coming from and you really root for her despite her...y'know, goal of murder. I liked reading her POV and the characters she interacted with, then later seeing what those characters thought about her. I hope she's happy wherever she is.

I am kinda mad about the ending because I hate cliffhangers/open endings. IMO, Sadie lost her fight with Jack/Keith/Darren, but is hopefully reunited with Mattie in the afterlife somewhere.

An amazing read to start the year off with! This is a thrilling, poignant read that'll stick with you and leave you stunned.
